Sandton Convention Centre makes 67 Minutes Count with Stop Hunger Now

14 July 2017 - In the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day, volunteers from all over the country and globe gathered at Sandton Convention Centre, tasked with the simple act of packing meals for underprivileged children as part of the Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa programme.

General Manager of Sandton Convention Centre, a Tsogo Sun property, Shaun Bird says, "Sandton Convention Centre has partnered with this initiative - whose chief patron is Graça Machel - for a number of years by sponsoring the venue at which volunteers made their 67 Minutes count. We are humbled to be a part of such a worthwhile initiative which contributes 2-million to the overall 3-million meals which are packed at events such as this held around the country."

This meal-packing event employed the collaborative efforts of celebrities, volunteers and Tsogo Sun employees alike. Among the hundreds of people who volunteered, Miss World title holders travelled from countries such as the USA, Indonesia, India, Kenya, Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic along with current Mr World, Rohit Khandelwal from India to play their role in the campaign. Other notable guests included Stop Hunger Now Ambassadors Matt Preston (Masterchef Australia Judge) and Chief Zwelivelile Mandela (Nelson Mandela's grandson).

"Malnutrition is an issue which has far-reaching effects on the well-being of our children, which in turn affects the livelihood of our future nation. Sandton Convention Centre is proud to have collaborated with the Stop Hunger Initiative," says Bird.

About STOP HUNGER NOW SOUTHERN AFRICA

Established in the USA in 1998 by Dr Ray Buchanan, Stop Hunger Now is an international organisation that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid worldwide.

Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa (SHN SA) is a volunteer-based meal packaging and results oriented nutrition programme, which was started in South Africa in 2009. There are currently two full-time operations (Johannesburg and Cape Town).

Their vision is a Southern Africa without hunger. Their mission is transformation through education. Educating our donors, beneficiaries, volunteers and suppliers about the role they play in eradicating child hunger. Donated food is used to stimulate and encourage measurable results in Early Childhood Development centres.

SHN SA offers a social investment opportunity to provide fully balanced meals for pre-school children necessary for their holistic development. The programme depends on passionate, active volunteers for meal packaging events and food distribution. The programme has solid, measurable results and restores hope for hungry children.

Key to the programme is a series of meal packaging events, where volunteers package the meals. The meals are highly nutritious and comprise of rice, soya, dehydrated vegetable mix and a fortification pack of 23 essential minerals and vitamins specifically formulated to combat malnutrition (complying with the UNICEF standard).

The meal packaging event is a fun and engaging way for volunteers to be part of the drive to end child hunger. 40 volunteers can be package 10 000 meals in under two hours! Our volunteers range from children as young as four years old to senior citizens. Scholars that volunteer are awarded a Community Service Certificate.

Given the efficiencies of hosting of meal packaging events, we are able to scale the event from one benefiting a single ECD to a series of packaging events that would benefit an entire community.
