Egoli Gas Sandton gas pipeline commissioning notification

Egoli Gas pipeline

Egoli Gas has been constructing a pipeline from Hyde Park through Sandhurst to Sandton CBD since 19 January.

The construction phase has been completed and the next phase is the commissioning of the pipeline, which is planned for the 20th July 2017 at around 18h00.

The process of commissioning will be as follows:
· Introduce nitrogen into the pipeline at Hyde Park. Nitrogen is an inert gas that is required when purging gas pipeline.
· When nitrogen has been pumped into the pipeline, then natural gas would be introduced into the pipeline. Nitrogen will be buffer between air and the natural gas
· The purge points are at Maude Street Cnr West Street and Stella Street Cnr Pretoria Avenue.
· During the purging process at the above mentioned streets, the public will both be subjected to noise and smell of sulphur which is introduced in the natural gas for ease of identifying of gas leaks. Natural gas in its nature form is odourless, therefore the is a need to inject/ add sulphur. Sulphur has a rotten egg smell. The pupil needs to be informed that they should not be alarmed as natural gas is lighter than air and therefore easily dispense to the atmosphere.
· The purging process is expected to last for about 2 hours, at all times Egoli Gas and its contractors will be on site to ensure that the progress is under control and runs smoothly.
