Announcing ‘Diamond Dust Apostrophes’ – an exhibition of Pebofatso Mokoena’s new body of work at David Krut Arts.

Opening: 19 July to end August 2025.

David Krut Arts, The Blue House, 151 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood.

Developed during a residency in the remote diamond town of Oranjemund, Namibia, this new body of work sees Mokoena navigate a complex and shifting landscape—ocean to the West, desert to the East, and air thick with weather and sensation. Rather than depict the terrain literally, ‘Diamond Dust Apostrophes’ explores how space is felt, remembered, and reimagined.

Building on the visual language developed in his 2020 exhibition Internal Probes, this series of unique works on paper made in collaboration with Sbongisenu Khulu and the David Krut Workshop, sees Mokoena treating the page as a site of excavation—where marks, colours, and compositional tension are used not to describe a scene, but to evoke a spatial experience. Guided by drawing, collage, and experimental printmaking techniques, the works operate as open-ended diagrams: layered with field notes, sonic references, and visual fragments that resemble mapping in progress.

The artist moves beyond traditional monotype approaches, merging meticulous mark-making with a musical sensibility. Rhythms heard during his residency echo in reverberating lines and wave-like forms that suggest both sound and motion. Throughout the series, contrasts between density and openness allow for both immersive and meditative encounters—offering not representations, but sensations.

‘Diamond Dust Apostrophes’ offers not a map of a place, but a visual language of experience—unfixed, atmospheric, and deeply personal.
