ALBIE SACHS: Fathers, Sons and Soft Vengeance is on at Theatre on the Square in Nelson Mandela Square.

Written by Gail Louw, this significant new play looks at the public and private life of revered South African activist, lawyer and constitutional judge, Albie Sachs.

Told with warmth and humanity, the story explores family, resilience and forgiveness – and asks what soft vengeance means in a world still learning how to heal.

Thought provoking, accessible and deeply relevant, this theatre speaks powerfully to South Africa today. The play is Sachs’ account of an idealistic youth, wounded survivor, devoted father and philosophical elder. The play is a poetic slice of biography and as it does not simply recount facts but is told in Albie’s voice recounting experiences of being a son, a father and an activist.

Albie is an inspiring figure who overcame great odds – and the audience should leave, not just with knowledge, but feeling transformed by the experience.
