For the first time in the festival's history, Joburg Tourism has partnered with Jazz in the Lights Music Festival hosted at the iconic Johannesburg Zoo. This strategic collaboration marks a significant milestone for the City’s Arts Alive Programme, contributing to positioning Johannesburg as Africa’s premier business hub and playground for leisure and lifestyle.

Now in its fourth edition, the festival celebrates South Africa’s rich jazz heritage and blends culture, history and lifestyle experiences, creating new synergies between the arts and tourism.

“Jazz in the Lights is more than a festival; it’s a celebration of our city’s cultural heartbeat and a powerful driver of economic growth,” says Belu Mabandla, Joburg Tourism Executive Head for Destination Marketing and Events. “By supporting this event, we are not just honouring Johannesburg’s artistic legacy, but also building a platform where local businesses and local artists can thrive.”

Jazz in the Lights is a flagship event hosted and produced by the City of Johannesburg as part of its Arts Alive Programme. “This new partnership underscores the City’s vision for sustained economic growth and firmly positions Johannesburg as Africa’s premier business and lifestyle destination,” adds Mabandla.

The festival’s economic impact is already proven: the 2024 edition empowered 22 small businesses, generated 208 jobs, contracted 177 professional artists and incorporated three school choirs through the Schools Development Programme — nurturing the next generation of talent.

“We’re also hitting the right notes for sustainability!” points out Mabandla.  “Our jazz festival is designed with animal welfare in mind: noise levels are strictly managed with zoo guidelines, on-site engineers monitor sound to protect our furry friends and trained zoo staff oversee animal and crowd behaviour. Groove responsibly with us!  We extend an invitation to the world to enjoy our city’s unique spirit and build on the festival’s positive impact,” she concludes.
